Something I never expected to see in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery was a bunch of tombs for Chinese people and families. Some of them also Christians. Here are just some of the Chinese tombs I found.

These are amazing. The thing that hurt the most -- still hurts -- about getting my camera stolen in Bogota 2 years ago is the photos of a cemetery that were on the SD card in the camera, taken two days earlier. It was a walled structure, with walkways and tall tomb structures with all kinds of super-Colombian decorations, and they're gone forever to me.
It's almost absurd, but pictures of cemeteries really are magic.
cemeteries are strangely fun and exciting to photograph, especially when they're old and have the character newer cemeteries can never emulate.
I didn't notice until just the other day how much I've made my way through cemeteries across my travels. Watch out for a post in the coming weeks of my favorite cemetery pictures from around the world.
I lived in Baton Rouge when I was in Grad school, and the apt. I rented was directly across the street from a tiny old cemetery. The entrance was framed by a big wrought iron arch that spelled out "Jewish Cemetery", and the site was raised above the surrounding land on a small bluff.
Most of the gravemarkers were big and old, and raised above ground (though not in the same style of the oven tombs you see in New Orleans). People rarely visited this place, but it was green and pretty with trees and flowering bushes. A groundskeeper kept it reasonably tidy. The gate was never locked, and on nice days I used to picnic there with one of my boyfriends, among the weathered old stones.
